Allergic Rhinitis

The acute seasonal form of Rhinitis is clearly allergic in origin and is triggered by the pollens of trees in spring, of grass and weeds in summer.

Occasionally it may be triggered by airborne fungal spores. Its distressing symptoms may include itching of the nose, the roof of the mouth and the pharynx; streaming eyes, sneezing and a clear watery nasal discharge. The picture may be complicated by the presence of asthma or sinus problems.

Contributing Factors

Factors underlying the occurrence of Allergic Rhinitis in a particular individual could include hypersensitivity (an over-reaction by the body’s immune system) to certain allergens, a system overexposed to irritants or inefficient elimination of toxins from the body. Worsening of the condition might coincide with periods of high stress.

Naturopathic Treatment

A Naturopathic treatment protocol would be designed to address a range of underlying causes, such as:

  • Identification and avoidance of allergens
  • Improving the condition of nasal and other mucous membranes
  • Boosting immune function and overall vitality
  • Use of herbal medicines to inhibit production of histamines and pro-inflammatory substances
  • Addressing nutritional deficiencies
  • Supporting liver function and digestion to help reduce the likelihood of allergic responses.
